RON NAGLE
Nocturn Around
secession

23.11.2019 – 9.2.2020 Vienna

In the Secession, the artist from San Francisco shows a selection of 25 sculptures and drawings from recent years.

Ron Nagle has been pursuing parallel careers as a visual artist and musician for about six decades. His small-format sculptures made of ceramic are at the same time miniature landscapes, abstract compositions, thoughts that have become form or pictorial jokes - Nagle's humor and preference for word and language games are expressed not only in his lyrics, but also in the titles of his sculptures. Thus, formulations such as "finishing touch" (final touch) become "Finishing Touchéz (last hit)" - whereby Nagele always emphasizes that the titles have no content-related connection to the objects and should not be read as a key to the understanding of the works.

In addition to the miniature format, structure, shape, color and last but not least the surface processing characterize the works of the artist, who has been working consistently on a redefinition of clay as an artistic material since the 1950s. Its development is closely intertwined with a movement from this time, which is now known as the California Clay Movement, which was specifically about the enhancement and establishment of ceramic materials as full-fledged artistic media. His works show numerous influences from European and American painting, from the Japanese ceramics of the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1573–1603) and even the Hot Rod culture.
